The Modernist Master of 1878 – 1881
Collected and described by Richard
Aboard the Mavis
New York: Dodd, Mead &. Co., 1880
|In 1878 a book cover appeared that was
decades ahead of the art movements incorporated in its design. We
see elements of Constructivism, Futurism, Surrealism, Abstract
Expressionism, and Graffiti. Over
the following three years several other titles, primarily juveniles,
were issued by various publishers in Boston and New York that have
similar artistic foundations.
This book is a fully
color illustrated essay on who the artist may be. It focuses
on John La Farge and his student, Sarah Wyman Whitman.
